POLISTREAM DIGITAL SUBTITLE TECHNOLOGY
SCREEN Subtitling Systems have had an extremely active year in terms of technology development.
2001 saw the worldwide launch of the new Polistream range of digital transmission systems.
Screen Subtitling Systems groundbreaking work in the development of DVB subtitling has resulted in this third generation of flexible and integrated solutions for such a complex application.
As DVB subtitling technology has expanded so has the requirement for more complex systems. Increasing languages and channels means increasing boxes and difficulties arise with redundancy and rack space costs, monitoring and control.
Screen needed to think of a system, which would benefit from economies of scale to the broadcaster, would not be administratively complex and avoid storage and network congestion.
Polistream provides all of these features with far more flexibility than standard subtitling equipment available on the market today, and boxes are not restricted to individual usage.
The Polistream main processing units work as an application and control system, which can be used in isolation as a high capacity DVB subtitle transmission system, or as a highly proficient front-end controller of any number of separate subtitling devices, all of which have the advantage of being controlled remotely.
Polistream is capable of controlling subtitling using a mix of DVB, teletext, line21, closed caption, Imitext and open subtitles.
The Polistream philosophy also allows for opportunistic data insertion. Screen is currently working closely with the BBC, testing the amount of free data available per subtitle transmitted.
