'SHORT SHORTS' AT GALWAY FILM FLEADH
THE PROGRAMME for this year’s Galway Film Fleadh will include the premiere of the Irish Film Board’s ‘Short Shorts’.
The Short Shorts scheme was first launched in May 2000 as an initiative to develop and encourage new Irish talent in the industry and promote new Irish cinema. The scheme aims to add to the range and scope of Irish short film-making and to promote talent in all areas of film production.
To enter, production companies were invited to send proposals for imaginative, eye-catching films from one to three minutes long. The finished pieces work with all the high impact power of ads, without an actual product to sell. The particular focus of Short Shorts is to encourage experimentation and innovation within the mediums of film, graphics and digital effect.
Rod Stoneman, Chief Executive of the Irish Film Board, said: “This series is a very exciting new project for the Board. We have been involved in over 80 feature films in the last seven years. Now we have decided to go to the opposite extreme and make some ultra-short films! The film-makers rose to the challenge magnificently. We intend using the final selection as marketing tools for the Film Board in cinemas, on television and on the Internet to promote further enterprise in the Industry.”
The Film Board are also launching ‘Short Shorts 2’, with a deadline for applications of October 1 2001. Proposals for Short Shorts 2 between 60 and 180 seconds long with budgets up to IR£12,000 (€15,000) should be sent to the Bord Scannán na hÉireann.
