Pioneer Production’s UK ratings winners go global
Pioneer Productions has capped the recent success of two of its major productions – 'The Wave That Shook The World' and 'Krakatoa' - with sales for the Channel 4 International distributed productions stretching across the globe.
The 60-minute documentary The Wave That Shook The World, an Equinox Special, was first shown on Channel 4 in January. One of the first programmes to be shown following the Asian tsunami, it charted the tragic events that took place in December 2004, and discussed the causes, geology, oceanography, hydrodynamics, and human impact of the disaster. Following its successful Channel 4 airing – attracting 3.1 million viewers – the documentary will now be shown by broadcasters across the world including eleven in European countries, plus regions of the Middle East, Asia and North America.
Krakatoa, a two-hour drama-documentary reconstructing one of the biggest natural disasters in recorded history, has also been sought after by international broadcasters. A combination of historical drama, special effects, location filming and scientific analysis, Krakatoa told the story of the devastating volcanic explosion of August 1883. Its broadcast on Channel 4 in January this year attracted 3.5m viewers. The film will now be shown by Canal+ in all French-speaking territories, by ZDF in all German-speaking territories, plus globally by Discovery Communications. Broadcasters in Australia and the Far East have also secured the rights.
Stuart Carter, Managing Director, Pioneer Productions, said: “These sales continue to show that we’re making programmes that the world wants to watch. The Wave That Shook The World and Krakatoa have massive global appeal. Our experience in science programme-making means we are uniquely placed to bring stories like these alive.”
