Yorkshire Television retool with eQ

As part of the refurbishment of their high-profile Edit One suite, Yorkshire Television, one of the UK’s major regional broadcasters and programme producers, have purchased a Quantel eQ Resolution Co-existent HD editing system.
Due to become fully operational around the end of 2003, the new Edit One has been two years in the design and planning stages and the choice of eQ is very much part of YTV’s desire to protect its investment over the long-term.
“It’s designed to be future-proof,” said Andrew Brearley, Technical Supervisor, YTV Post Production,“and to be something that can bridge the current standard definition world and the potential high definition market that we may end up getting involved with. As a UK broadcaster, high def isn’t as high on the hit list as standard def is currently, but having said that I have already been asked what formats we’ll be able to handle in there and it’s not even up and working yet.”
The eQ, which is being installed with 200 minutes of HD storage, joins the four Editboxes already installed at YTV’s Leeds headquarters. “That provides us with continuity, but the reliability factor we’ve become used to with Quantel products also influenced our decision,” continued Brearley. “Plus there’s the fact that HD and standard def reside in the same box, it’s not an optional extra and it doesn’t cost any extra to buy. All in all it made a great deal of sense to chose the eQ.”
The machine is currently being installed in one of YTV’s existing Editbox suites, with a full transplant of control surfaces into Edit One scheduled for when the new area is completed.
