‘Candy Bar Kid’ film secures BAFTA nomination

The 35mm short 'Candy Bar Kid' has been nominated for a BAFTA in the Best Short Film Category at this year’s awards on the 23rd February in London.
The three-minute short was written and directed by Glaswegian Shan Khan and produced by Benjamin Johns of Eye-Cue Films, with Edinburgh-based Paul Gavin as Director of Photography.
Filmed on the streets of London, this first film by writer Shan Khan (whose award-winning drama 'Office' premiered at last year's Edinburgh International Festival to wide acclaim) portrays raw street life in any European city today.
'Candy Bar Kid' will be part of a trilogy based on the theme of sex, drugs and rock and roll, the film stars Mark Tonderai and eight-year-old Harris Khan, who in his first acting role delivers a fine performance.
Paul Gavin, Director of Photography said: “We are honoured and delighted to be one of the six nominations for this prestigious BAFTA award. 'Candy Bar Kid' achieved runner-up in the recent Kodak BAFTA Showcase, and it's amazing that we've now come so far, especially with so many good short films submitted.”
The short film was produced on a tiny budget of £2,000.
“With key personnel on board, we sourced additional crew from shootingpeople.com - a free web service for freelancers and trainees looking to gain experience in the film industry,” Paul Gavin explained.
"We were inundated with offers of help, from people with no experience through to a grip, Ian Buckley, who had just come off the Harry Potter movie, said he had a day off, and thought he would come along to lend a hand."
Camera, grip and lighting kit was supplied by VFG Manchester, processing by Soho Images, neg cutting was by Computamatch, mixing by DB Post, and titles were by Frameline.
