RTÉ Banks On SysMedia System For High Speed Teletext Updates

SysMedia has provided RTÉ with an innovative IP-based teletext page editing system that allows bookmakers across the country to provide rapid updates to vital onscreen betting information.
The system is now fully operational following earlier trials.
RTÉ Publishing, the publishing division of Ireland’s national broadcaster, RTÉ, uses SysMedia’s market leading PLASMA teletext production and management system to power the Aertel teletext services on both RTÉ 1 and RTÉ 2 as well as the internet.
Giving bookmakers instant and cost-effective access to update their content on these Aertel services, RTÉ selected SysMedia’s WinSPRITE page editing technology.
The pages are created and edited at the bookmakers’ sites with the WinSprite PC software and then sent via internet connectivity to RTÉ’s central PLASMA system, which updates the live teletext services totally automatically.
“Given horse racing’s nature, where last-minute changes before races are a given, the power of this solution is undeniable. It provides both broadcaster and bookmaker with the ability to supply up-to-date information cost-effectively – ultimately it is the viewer who benefits,” explains Kevin Lingley, Interactive Product Manager, SysMedia.
Marcus O’Doherty, Technology Development Manager, RTÉ Publishing, added: "RTE Publishing is continually seeking to enhance the range of services on offer to our audience and customers across all delivery platforms, through innovation and the use of new technologies. The SysMedia system has fulfilled our expectations with regard to performance and ease of use."
SysMedia specialises in subtitling and content creation and distribution systems for teletext and interactive services, with an emphasis on workflow automation and optimum productivity.
A UK-based company with over 30 years’ experience in the broadcast market, Sysmedia customers include the BBC and BSkyB. SysMedia is also a leading supplier of specialist teletext signal generators for consumer electronics manufacturers.
RTÉ Publishing is an Integrated Business Division (IBD) of RTÉ, encompassing the businesses of the RTÉ Guide, RTÉ.ie, Aertel, Commercial Telecoms, content syndication, and the incubation of new technology. The division is three years old and generates an annual turnover of €16 million and is a self-sustaining within RTÉ.
