Students at Bournemouth Arts Institute scoop three awards
Students on the BA (Hons) Film Production course at the Arts Institute at Bournemouth scooped three trophies at the 2006 Kodak Student Commercial Awards.
The Kodak Student Commercial Awards are recognised within the industry as a ‘stepping stone’ for new talent. This year, the awards were held at Madame Tussauds Wax Museum in London, with prizes being given for each of the categories which included commercial briefs for ‘Kodak’, ‘Vittel’, ‘Pilsner Urquell’ and ‘Cancer Research UK’. The shortlisted films at the ceremony, judged by a panel of industry professionals including Peter Bigg from the BTAA, were chosen from over 120 entries from 24 different film schools.
The students who attended the ceremony from the Arts Institute at Bournemouth included Matt Grinter, (director) and Stephanie Wraite, (producer) of their commercial ‘Yukka’, which won ‘Best in Brief’ Award for ‘Vittel’. James Parish, (director) and Damon Crane (producer) of Oncology, which won two awards including joint third ‘Best in Brief’ award, for ‘Cancer Research UK’, and the ‘Best Sound Design’ award which went to their sound technician Drew Beattie.
To make their commercials, the students were supplied with relevant film stock from Kodak. Each commercial was judged on the cinematography, post production, production design and sound design, with the best commercial in each category awarded ‘Best in Brief’.
The Arts Institute at Bournemouth specialises in art, design and media courses. It has recently been designated a Skillset Screen Academy centre of excellence status in conjunction with Bournemouth University and prior to that, it was awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for its outstanding work in the fields of film, television and animation.
The awards ceremony was an excellent opportunity for the students to meet with industry professionals, as it brought together experts from all areas of the film industry, including representatives from post houses, labs, camera rental companies, production companies, directors, cinematographers and previous winners.
