S4C CELEBRATES 18TH BIRTHDAY
S4C WELSH broadcasters celebrated their 18th birthday on November 1.
CEO of S4C, Huw Jones, said: “S4C was born at a time when only three television channels existed. It grew up as one of four channels. The need for a Welsh voice and a voice in the Welsh language, in the midst of the abundance choice, is stronger than ever. The main challenge for us for the future is to ensure that we provide a constant flow of unique, memorable programmes and that we offer a daily, easily accessible gateway to a rich, multi-faceted culture through the medium of the welsh language. There is no conflict between this ambition and the desire to express ourselves energetically through the medium of one of Europe’s oldest languages. The channel has come of age and is ready to step confidently towards an exciting future.”
Since 1982, all Welsh language television programmes have been transmitted on S4C to create one comprehensive Welsh medium service. Prior to S4C’s establishment, the limited number of Welsh programmes produced were scattered throughout BBC1 and ITV schedules.
S4C are commissioning broadcasters, rather than programme producers, creating jobs and boosting the local economy throughout Wales. All the services on offer are transmitted from S4C’s Headquarters in Llanishen, Cardiff.
