Rushes post new Underworld promo
Rushes have recently completed an accomplished groundbreaking music video featuring wasps for the cult club band Underworld.
Shot on location in South Africa, this outstanding promo follows the wasps' journey of destruction from their hive to the city, desert, coast, and back again. Exquisitely shot and with haunting imagery the promo appears to be in slow motion and features the movement of hair and water elegantly cascading over the screen. Throughout the promo the wasps are causing great turmoil with the landscape around them being whipped up in to a blustery frenzy.
Rushes VFX artist Derek Moore said: "Using a revolutionary new camera, director Howard Greenhalgh (Muse, Placebo, George Michael) captured images of enormous turbulence at 1000 frames per second. This would have been impossible using traditional photosonics film equipment in the locations chosen, so he chose a new data camera, which records images directly to hard disk."
Rushes carefully unpicked the massive data files, and provided editor Nicholas Wayman Harris with the footage from which to cut. In post, the new Rushes 3D team went to work, making photo-realistic wasps which were tracked and composited in Inferno to make it look like it was they (rather than the large helicopters, which had to be removed) that were causing all the disturbance. Rushes also made additional swarms of wasps using Inferno's particle system, borrowing the 3D wasp as a base.
"The shots Howard got out of that little camera are totally amazing, it is only a matter of time before whole commercials are made using this fantastic new technique," added Moore.
