Edition DV used to edit Keating tour film

When he was asked to make a short film about Ronan Keating's latest tour, Ian Smith, director of digital media production company Recorded Devilery, decided to make it using Pinnacle Systems' Edition DV video editing software.
The film, which lasts for about 30 minutes, features a typical 24-hour period during the tour, starting as Ronan comes off stage at the end of one performance and finishing as he and the band come back for the next. It is a generic 24-hours, so footage was taken from a variety of different locations and cut together in the final edit. It was a project that called for a great deal of filming and copious editing. Smith estimates that the ratio of shot tape to that which was actually used was 10 to 1.
It was a high profile job as the finished work was to be included on the official DVD and video of the tour.
At the time, Recorded Devilery were already working on the tour, making a series of video diaries for Ronan's website. They had editing software, but Smith and his team felt that the new film called for something more powerful that could handle the large number of clips.
This was when their supplier, Planet DV introduced them to Edition DV from Pinnacle Systems.
Smith said: "The Edition appeared to have everything we wanted. We were not limited by having to go out to analogue tape or film as we stayed within a digital domain; it allowed us to split the material across two screens so we had plenty of room to work; and the bin system made it easy to organise the clips." He also appreciated the fact that it has its own operating system which allows it to take over from Windows, like a top-end professional editor, and it was very easy to use and learn. He continued: "Not only are there an enormous number of effects, the software renders very quickly and it is highly intuitive. In fact, it behaves like a system costing a lot more money."
Since making the Ronan DVD Ian has continued to use Edition for a number of other projects, including an interactive, self-help DVD.
