Brainstorm Launches The FLECON-6G Project
Brainstorm is contributing to the media and broadcasting world's undergoing a revolution caused by the launch of the FLECON-6G project, a Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking under the Horizon Europe program initiative set to transform the industry through cutting-edge 6G technologies.
This ambitious project, which kicked off in January 2025 in Barcelona, introduces an innovative approach to connectivity and immersive experiences. The project is coordinated by Prof. Christos Verikoukis from Industrial Systems Institute/Athena Research Center, a Greek-based research institution with high experience in advanced telecommunications solutions.
FLECON-6G addresses some of telecommunications and media sectors’ biggest challenges. The concept of Network of Networks will easy the transmission along a multi operators path and the AI based network management improve the system reliability and provides ultra-low latency. In media, this means an improvement on audience engagement a tackle to high production costs, and therefore more sustainable solutions. The shift to virtual and remote production helps reduce logistical expenses and the industry's carbon footprint, while AI-driven workflows ensure adaptability to rapidly evolving technological demands.
According to Professor Christos Verikoukis, Project Coordinator: "FLECON-6G is a collective effort to push the boundaries of connectivity and immersive experiences. This project brings together leading experts from telecommunications and media industries to create an intelligent 'Network of Networks.' Our focus on AI-driven, low-latency solutions is key to achieving a sustainable, impactful 6G ecosystem."
A key contributor to this project is Brainstorm Multimedia, which is developing a new teleportation pipeline based on stereoscopic capture of participants and visualization through virtual reality headsets. The processing of these captures will leverage FLECON's infrastructure to distribute content processing along the transmission path. This approach will help reduce transmission latency and create a system capable of enabling interaction between participants, even though the signals representing them are among the most demanding in terms of bandwidth and frame rates.
Francisco Ibáñez, R&D Projects Director at Brainstorm, outlines that "Brainstorm’s role in FLECON-6G underscores our commitment to innovation in virtual production and XR. By integrating 6G technologies, we are creating tools that redefine collaboration and storytelling. The teleportation pipeline we’re developing is a game-changer for immersive media, enabling participants to connect in ways previously unimaginable."
In words of Andrea Castelli, Project Manager at Brainstorm: "Participating in the FLECON-6G project allows Brainstorm to contribute directly to the next generation of storytelling technologies. Our involvement in the Seamless Immersive Reality (SIR) Proof of Concept showcases how media production can be transformed through 6G-enabled infrastructures, delivering interactive and engaging experiences to audiences worldwide."
With 6G technology, production companies can streamline operations by leveraging real-time data processing and high-capacity networks to achieve faster turnaround times and improved content quality. Enhanced remote production capabilities mean reduced travel and setup costs. Immersive storytelling techniques open new avenues for audience engagement, allowing content creators to craft more interactive and personalized experiences. Furthermore, the project's sustainability focus helps media companies meet environmental goals by optimizing resource utilization and minimizing waste.
The FLECON-6G consortium brings together global leaders in telecommunications, media production, and academic research. This collaboration ensures that the project benefits from cross-sector expertise, fostering solutions that are both technologically robust and market-ready. With the power of 6G technology, creators can offer more engaging and immersive experiences, pushing the boundaries of digital storytelling.
