eQ in a whirl at Wimbledon with Tornado
Quantel has confrimed that one of its recent eQ customers, camera and grip rental facility ARRI Media, is supporting BBC Sport at Wimbledon with its innovative digital high-speed capture and playback system Tornado.
Exclusively provided in Europe by ARRI Media, the Tornado system combines the fxCam camera from NAC Image Technology, which is capable of recording images up to 1000fps, with a Quantel eQ editing/effects/grading and versioning machine. The eQ allows the raw images from the camera to be enhanced and then easily versioned to any required output standard.
The Tornado system has been in development for some months and is being used at Wimbledon in its most advanced version to date. For the first time the eQ processing unit is directly connected to the PC that controls image capture and download, allowing for a much faster turnaround of recorded sequences.
The ultra slow-mo images have been highly praised by BBC commentators as the Tornado can produce views that no other system can offer, creating replays showing detail that would normally be missed by the naked eye. BBC Sport has also used the system for coverage of horse racing and golf, and Channel 4 and SKY Sports for international test cricket.
