Rushes complete post graphics on BBC Aids documentary

Rushes Post Production was recently chosen by the BBC’s prestigious Specialist Factual Department to carry out the post work on a ground-breaking new documentary on the Aids epidemic.
Entitled ‘Being Postive’, this insightful two-parter, ‘Dead Unlucky’ and ‘Dead Lucky’, directed and produced by Andy Robbins, is a look at the social history of the HIV and Aids epidemic from its first appearance in Africa to its rapid spread throughout the world.
Using an effective mix of interviews, live action street scenes and facts and figures, this series leaves the viewer in little doubt about the impact that this cruel disease has had around the globe. As people go about their daily lives, be it in London, New York, or rural Africa, graffiti bubbles appear on screen and spread rapidly across buildings and other everyday objects, replicating the terrifying advancement of the epidemic. Personal portraits and interviews are interwoven with shocking statistics that detail the rising number of HIV and Aids sufferers, thereby demonstrating both the personal and social impact that the disease has wrought.
Matt Lawrence at Rushes said: "Alongside modern graffiti-style graphic design and animation, multi layered split screens were used to lead the audience through the histories and personal tragedies. We used After Effects, PhotoShop, Illustrator and Flash to design, animate and composite over 40 minutes of live action and animation sequences during a 16-week period. This mammoth task was completed in tandem with the editing process and had to remain fluid and upbeat in light of the subject matter."
Director Andy Robins added:" I was overjoyed with the quality of the graphics Matt and Costas produced. We would never usually use these kind of web animation techniques, but it has worked wonderfully."
