New Skills for Screen course to be held in Glasgow
SCOTTISH Screen are accepting applications for places on a new 'Skills for Screen: Negotiating Skills' course to be held in Glasgow on February 21 2002.
This is a one-day course designed to give producers an overall picture of the terms for deals they are likely to be negotiating during the course of production. These deals range from the acquisition of underlying rights in course material (books, scripts and screenplays) to development deals with broadcasters and other bodies which fund development, production and co-production agreements and deals with distributors for the sale of completed programmes.
In the second part of the course producers are given advice on techniques and strategies for negotiation and practical 'role-playing' exercises in the negotiation of different types of sales. This is followed by interviews and discussions with leading negotiators from the industry.
Tutor Dorothy Viljoen, PACT Business Affairs Adviser, has worked as a freelance business affairs consultant for independent film and television companies for the past ten years. She was also a Specialist Expert on Negotiating for the EAVE course for the MEDIA programme. In 1995 she was commissioned by the Council of Europe to write a handbook on co-productions, which was published as The Key to Negotiation of Audio-Visual Co-productions. Dorothy's career in television spans more than thirty years, during which time she has worked as Deputy Head of the ITV Network Programme Secretariat; Head of Scripts at ATV network; Head of Rights Negotiations at Central Television and as Director of Business Affairs and Head of the London office in the US for producer and distributor D.L.Taffner.
