ITK and 5D join forces for NAB demonstrations

News Image
Media solutions developer 5D at booth S3908 and telecine manufacturer ITK (logo, picture) at booth L6053, who entered into a technology alliance last year, are further integrating their technologies at NAB 2002 to demonstrate their data pipeline for 2K post production.
Visitors to 5D’s booth will be able to watch demonstrations of 5D Commander - 5D’s real-time film and video record and review system - working in conjunction with ITK’s Millennium Machine telecine.
In this implementation scanned images from the Millennium Machine are outputted to the 5D Commander at even higher efficency. In a digital intermediate environment, 5D Commander could then be used to check, and distribute materials between a range of film compositing and mastering solutions, including 5D Cyborg and 5D Colossus.
"Combining these technologies shows how the start of a digital intermediate data pipeline can provide significant improvements in workflow, productivity and the distribution of materials," said Marc Dando, a director at 5D.
"In this example, 5D Commander effectively turns the Millennium Machine telecine into a fast and efficient data scanner, and it’s the sort of workflow pipeline that many customers are eager to lay down."
ITK Managing Director Delphi Durrant said: "With the seamless workflow provided by integrating our two technologies ITK and 5D are showing the future of digital intermediates and post production. The pipelined data flow from initial film scanning to special effects work, editing and colour correction to the finished product has never been more straightforward. The time is right for this new way of working."
With over 30 sold to post-production facilities worldwide, the Millennium Machine offers progressive functionality, radically different design and state-of-the-art electronics.
5D Commander was designed to provide a convenient and flexible way to view full-frame SD, HD, CG and film-resolution data, such as daily test composites for film special effects and 3D content. As soon as materials are output from the originating workstation they can be viewed on Commander.
By enabling the viewing on a CRT, or via a digital projector, the system offers a cost-effective alternative to the traditional process of checking digital dailies by outputting to film.
5D Commander has been installed at leading film post houses including Digital Domain, Mill Film, Digital ImageWorks and Das Werk.
