Viviane Reding to present the EU's Media Prize
For the third time, Viviane Reding, Member of the European Commission responsible for education and culture, will be awarding the EU's Media Prize in Cannes.
Presented on Friday, May 24, at the closing ceremony of Directors' Fortnight, the Media Prize is awarded to the first or second full-length film by a young director which has been distributed most widely outside its country of origin and which has received support from the EU's Media programme. The Prize is worth € 25 000, along with a glass sculpture which Viviane Reding will be handing over at the closing ceremony of Directors' Fortnight.
The first two editions of the Media Prize went to Damien O’Donnell for "East is East" (2000) and to Frédéric Fonteyne for "Une Liaison Pornographique" (2001).
The European Commission will once again be present in Cannes with its Media Stand, and will be organising a round-table discussion on May 24 on the impact of digital technology in cinema. Under the Media Plus programme (2001-2005), the European Commission supports projects in this field.
In addition, Viviane Reding will be in Cannes to set out the structure and objectives of the European Cinema Heritage Week, to be held from November 15 to 23 2002. The Heritage Week is held in association with the Association of European Film Archives, the Europa Cinema network, municipal authorities from more than 50 towns and cities in Europe, and Education Ministries.
