'Red Road' special jury prize success at Cannes
'Red Road', Andrea Arnold’s debut feature, has won a special jury prize at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
The film, produced for Glasgow-based Sigma Films by Carrie Commerford, had a successful competition screening at Cannes, with audience, critics and judges all enthusing about it and Kate Dickie’s central performance in particular.
Scottish Culture Minister, Patricia Ferguson, said: "It is a fantastic achievement for Red Road to be win a special jury prize at Cannes, one of the world's leading film festivals. It proves that Scotland has a wealth of creative film talent with excellent writers, actors and production staff."
Ken Hay, Chief Executive of Scottish Screen, commented: “Everyone at Scottish Screen is delighted to see the success that Red Road has attracted. That success is down to the immense hard work of the production team, a great cast and the unique talent of Andrea Arnold. It demonstrates that with a relatively low budget you can take on the best in the world.”
Red Road is the first in a series of films under Zentropa’s Advance Party initiative, supported by Scottish Screen National Lottery investment. The film tells the story of a CCTV operator who watches over and protects the people she sees on her monitors, regarding them almost as family. But one day she spots a man on her screen she had hoped never to see again.
