BBC & Quantel work on tapeless post solution

BBC Post Production have announced that they have partnered with Quantel to introduce a digital server based solution that will be phased in to service BBC Post Production’s customers, including BBC Sport.
The partnership aims to develop a tailored digital server-based solution that will be suitable for modern digital widescreen production, maximise work efficiencies, allow better browse and media selection facilities and improve work flow solutions in fast turn-round activities.
BBC Post Production will begin with a combination of linear and non-linear editing and move towards a complete tapeless post production solution within three to five years. In the short term, there will be a reduction in tape-based working although archive capture will still be take place on tape for the immediate future. Ingest from incoming feeds, post production and server playout will all become part of a tapeless process.
The full project will involve a phased refurbishment of BBC Post Production’s facilities, beginning with replacing existing analogue systems with a digital server based post production system for BBC Sport. This will also be rolled out and introduced to service other BBC and commercial customers.
