New tapeless solution from BBC Post Production

BBC Post Production London is adding a new flexible tapeless solution for fast turn-around editing.
The non-linear solution, based on Avid’s new AirSpeed product, enables clips to be edited whilst sources are still being digitised – saving time and allowing more flexible working for production.
The AirSpeed meets a demand for fast turn around editing that has conventionally remained the last bastion of tape based workflows. The AirSpeeds however give production teams access to the more powerful and sophisticated editing tools associated with the highly user-friendly Avid Adrenaline interface.
This workflow sits alongside BBC Post Production’s EVS LSM server based technology offering programme makers and craft professionals a choice of creative tools when preparing packages for sport and event based programmes.
In deploying the AirSpeeds, bespoke user-friendly touch-screen software allows control of ingest in all editing areas enabling any source be routed into to the Unity, the recordings pre named, and timers set to capture at a set time.
The new Avid AirSpeed solution is ideal for longer-form fast turn around editing, such as highlights packages for Match of the Day. BBC Sport has been the first customer to utilise the new solution however BBC Post Production is planning to roll it out to Independent and BBC customers in other programme areas.
BBC Post Production, who pioneered the use of Avid Adrenalines, is the first facilities house to adopt the new AirSpeed. Four channels have been installed so far, working alongside eight Avid Adrenalines, Media Manager and an 11 Terabyte Unity server. Each Airspeed stores media temporarily on its’ internal hard drive before transferring frames into the Unity workspace. It is no longer necessary to wait until all of the material has been ingested, the expanding clip being available for editing within 15 seconds of the first captured frame.
