APT codecs assist in re-building process for Serbian radio

Belfast-based company Audio Processing Technology (APT) have been approached to assist in the rebuilding of Serbian radio station Radio Televizija Srbije (TTS).
TTS lost most of its technical assets to the NATO campaign and anti-Slobodan Milosevic protestors, and so the Serbian radio station is about to undergo a major re-building programme that is intended to transform it into a public broadcasting system for the nation.
Although funding for the project has yet to be agreed, staff at RTS – who are overseeing the project – are already beginning to get the broadcaster back on its feet. As part of this process, RTS has invested in a number of audio codecs from APT. These include eight NLXs and four BCF codecs, which are being used to transmit five stereo signals via multiplex to the radio station’s main switching rooms.
Milan Orlic, Chief Technical Director for RTS, said: “We are still trying to re-build the studios and transmission facilities and we are back on-air broadcasting more than 100 hours of programming a day. But there is much to be done and very little money with which to do it.
"One of our first purchases was the APT codecs, which we chose because they offer exceptional quality in terms of programme delivery and also very low delay times. They were the ideal codecs for our requirements.”
Jon McClintock, commercial director for APT, said: “This project was certainly quite interesting. When RTS started investigating codecs their remit was simple – a codec with low-delay and excellent audio specifications. Having evaluated several manufacturers codecs they decided to implement APT codecs."
The transformation is being spearheaded by a new board of directors, which was appointed by the new Serbian government. The process includes journalists and independent professionals from all walks of life, many of whom were actively opposed to Milosevic during his years in power.
