APT AND DTS BRING AUDIO QUALTIY TO FILM
AUDIO PROCESSING Technology (APT) have signed a five-year licensing agreement with DTS through which they will license their ‘apt-X algorithm’ for use in all DTS’s professional cinema sound systems.
DTS have been using APT’s integrated circuits in their cinema systems since 1993 but this new deal represents the first time APT has licensed the digital audio compression technology in DSP (digital signal processor) code format to the company.
Noel McKenna, managing director of APT said: “We are delighted to announce this agreement which guarantees the future of ‘apt-X’ in DTS professional cinema systems.”
John Kirchner, president of DTS added: “The new licensing agreement is a result of our success in the cinema industry and our commitment to develop new products using APT technology.”
As McKenna of APT explained: “The DSP code provides DTS with a flexible alternative to conventional integrated circuits and allows them to incorporate APT’s ‘apt-X’ algorithm into their systems in a more efficient way. By incorporating the ‘apt-X’ algorithm, DTS can implement five channels of ‘apt-X’ decoding within the one DSP therefore reducing the overall hardware requirement in the playout system.”
APT are now actively licensing ‘apt-X’ algorithm in software format for both PC and DSP platforms in order to eliminate previous hardware constraints. On the PC platform the algorithm is known as ‘SOFT apt-X’ which is based around the original 16bit algorithm for which the company is renowned ‘SOFT apt-X delivers all the key benefits of the original algorithm, including outstanding audio quality, negligible coding delay and immunity to multiple encode and decode cycles.
