Award-Winning Director Joins Crossroads Films UK
Crossroads Films UK has announced that award-winning Short Film Director Nick Scott is joining their roster of outstanding directing talent for commercials and digital content representation.
Nick's work has been recognised and awarded at film festivals around the world, from Sundance to Brief Encounters, and he is a three-time winner at Straight 8, with his short film Breaker also being screened at the Clermont-Ferrand and at South Africa's Golden Lion festival.
His short School Portrait was also picked up for US & European distribution through Shorts International. His latest short, Big Society, caught the eye of Crossroads' Managing Director, Carly Stone, when she was a judge at this year's Anglo/Danish short film festival, Bornshorts, where Nick subsequently won best short film. Big Society is also nominated for the Grand Prix at the Encounters festival and is now eligible for a BAFTA.
Having originally studied screenwriting, Nick also studied the Meisner acting technique at the Actors Temple and he has used the improvisational techniques he learned there throughout his directing career. Big Society is no exception - a bleak and black comedy about a soldier returning to civilian life with his own somewhat extreme ideas about how society should be run, Nick worked with a young cast from the Urban Young Actors in Leicester. With little formal training, the young actors deliver some amazing, spontaneous scenes which Nick has brilliantly captured. The film was inspired by Nick's own experience of growing up in the garrison town of Colchester and the struggles experienced by men returning from war-zones and trying to integrate back into "normal" life.
Nick also currently has three feature screenplays in development. Black Box Recorder was selected for the Berlinale Script Clinic in 2007 and Fly on the Wall short listed by Film London for the Microwave funding scheme. It’s not me, it’s you is at a treatment stage.
Crossroads' MD Carly Stone said: “Nick is a rare find, a young but experienced comedy performance director who understands how to work intimately with actors and draw out hilarious characters. I never tire of watching Big Society, it's mixture of comedy performance with its dark undertone is something that Nick has carefully balanced and is a well received and engaging film. Crossroads can’t wait to introduce him to advertising and create some more memorable characters.”
