Screen South Films On Showcase In Texas
South East Talent will be out in force at the forthcoming South By South West Festival taking place from 7-15 March. Based in Austin, Texas, South by South West is one of the world's leading Music and Media Conferences.
Four Screen South-backed filmmakers have been selected to showcase their work at the South By South West Festival which kicks off this Friday. Lewes-based Writer/Director Jerry Rothwell's will host the world premiere of his latest documentary Heavy Load. The highly anticipated film looks at the year in the life of Brighton-based punk band Heavy Load, whose members include some musicians with learning disabilities.
Brighton-based Grant Gee's award winning documentary Joy Division will make its US debut. The film takes a look at the lasting influence of the legendary band, whose lead singer Ian Curtis was the subject of last year’s multiple award winning film by Anton Corbijn, Control.
Meanwhile, Kat Mansoor who directed last year's acclaimed digital short Time Piece, will be screening her debut feature Here's Johnny in the Global Doc Days strand. The documentary looks at the life, Art and…multiple sclerosis of legendary comic book writer John Wagner, the creator of Judge Dredd and 2000 A.D.
The 2007 Screen South Digital Short Odd Shoe, directed by Paul Cotter and written by Claire Bloomfield, has also been selected to screen at the festival. The film beautifully illustrates how a young boy’s life turns around when he swaps his battered trainers for gleaming leather shoes.
Screen South CEO Jo Nolan said: "We are absolutely delighted to see South East talent succeeding on the international scene. Brighton and the East Sussex area is fast establishing itself as a real hotbed for award winning documentary making and it is fantastic to see these highly talented directors and producers making a real impact on the international marketplace."
