BSkyB Creates London Networked Media Distribution Centre Based On DayPort

Dayport recently secured an order from BSkyB (Sky) to create a Networked Media Distribution Centre – NMDC - to be based at its headquarters in West London.
Using DayPort’s Carbon Content Management system as the foundation of the NMDC, Sky will create a centralised facility to be used by all Sky channels (including Sky Sports), to ingest, search, view, process, manage and publish content to all new media platforms and syndicators of Sky video content. In addition, the system will allow User Generated Content (UGC) and Sky personnel in the field, to ingest video and repurpose for broadcast, via each of the Sky channels.
The Dayport system to be installed in Sky’s NMDC will be configured to meet the operational workflow and technical requirements, in a similar way to the specific configurations created by Dayport in conjunction with Sky, for the existing Carbon Publish solution at Sky News Active. Content and metadata will be ingested from all of Sky’s content production platforms including, Avid editing, Leitch Nexio server platform, tape and other sources.
The primary user of the new system will be Sky Sports and the services provided by the NMDC will also extend to all Sky Channels. The recently expanded Dayport Carbon Publish system in Sky News Active, will also be connected to the Network Media Distribution Centre to enable Sky News and Sky Sports to transfer video between the two facilities.
The Dayport Carbon system is completely scaleable and can easily be configured or expanded, to accommodate the increasing demand for video and information on the expanding range of consumer devices and video platforms. In addition, the system’s flexibility allows Sky to incorporate the ability to ingest UGC content into the NMDC.
Andy Ioannou, SVP of Sales and Marketing for DayPort stated: "We have been working with Sky in a consultative role for several months and have spent a significant amount of time with the Network Media team at Sky to identify, understand and design the NMDC in order to meet the current and future business and operational needs for the management of content to Sky’s rapidly expanding outlets for Sky content. Incorporating the ability to ingest UGC, represents the rapid growth within the area of the new media market and also the need for systems which can cater for bi-directional flow and management of content. We are delighted that Sky has commissioned DayPort for the NMDC project.”
