First Light Movies Awards To Take Place In February

The UK's very own 'Mini Oscars', the First Light Movies Awards 2007, will take place in February.
The judging panel includes Titanic star Kate Winslet, Billy Elliot director Stephen Daldry and British movie director Sir Alan Parker. They will be casting their eyes over two digitally-shot films funded through the First Light Movies initiative, which have been made by young people from Lambeth.
The two movies have been nominated for awards in the Best Drama and Best Horror categories:
  • Fast Break - This hard-hitting drama about life on and off the basketball court was made by 15 young people, aged between 10 and 18, working with West Norwood's Fierce Productions. The film was made using approximately £10,000 of National Lottery funding through a First Light Movies Studio Award.
  • The Looking Glass - This surreal and disturbing horror follows the story of a girl who finds herself in a nightmarish world following a car crash. It was made by a group of six 12 to 16-year-olds working with Brixton's Latimer Films. The First Light Movies Pilot Award gave £4,000 in funding for this project.
Winners will be announced at a red-carpet event hosted by Alex Zane at the Odeon West End on Tuesday 27 February 2007.
First Light Movies provides funding and expertise to help young people throughout the UK create their own films, using National Lottery money through UK Film Council funding.
