'Breaking And Entering' Pays Homage To Transforming London
Director Anthony Minghella’s second London shot film, a story about relationships and burglaries, is set in a transforming King’s Cross.
Jude Law plays Will Francis, a landscape architect whose company, Green Effects, is involved with the redevelopment of the area. 'Breaking and Entering' explores his relationships with his partner and her daughter, as well as attitudes to refugees, following the burglary of his company offices.
With a stellar cast including Juliet Binoche, Ray Winstone, Martin Freeman and Robin Wright Penn, the film features an impressive performance from newcomer Rafi Gavron as a young Bosnian free jumper.
North London, home to the director, the producer and Jude Law was impressively used as a backdrop to depict a conflicting London. Council estates, plush Victorian houses and the massive urban regeneration project of King’s Cross (which acts as a metaphor throughout) were all caught on film.
Film London helped the production gain access to film at Kings Cross and the Channel Tunnel Rail link site through meeting with key stakeholders and enlisting support of London agencies. The Green Effects offices were actually shot in an abandoned iron foundry in Bow, as it proved impossible to find a derelict building in today’s Kings Cross.
'Breaking and Entering' portrays a beautifully-shot London where the capital’s vistas are seen from different perspectives, with an array of characters living together in seemingly different worlds.
Other locations included Camden Stables Market, Hungerford Footbridge, Primrose Hill, Alexandra Estate, Alexandra Palace, Talacre Community Sports Centre, Bethnal Green Town Hall and Holloway Police Station.
