'A Good Year' Graded On Resolve And 4K DI Work
da Vinci Systems has announced that the newly released motion picture 'A Good Year' was graded on Resolve within a complete 4K Digital Intermediate (DI) workflow.
The film's colour enhancement was performed by Hollywood post-production facility Modern VideoFilm.
"Resolve is the only grading software of its kind powerful enough to deliver the rich, detailed look desired for this film in a DI workflow," said Skip Kimball, senior colorist at Modern VideoFilm. "The nonlinear environment, unlimited PowerWindows and layers, and the ability to generate multiple grades for a single shot allowed us complete artistic control over the images."
'A Good Year' follows the life of a London businessman who inherits a vineyard in France's Provence region. From the outset, director Ridley Scott felt that a 4K resolution was the best way to emphasize the different looks between London, where he sought a cool, somber feel, and Provence, which he wanted to portray as warm, bright, and inviting.
Resolve's DI workflow allowed Modern VideoFilm to work seamlessly with 4K material to meet this requirement. Once the negatives for 'A Good Year' were scanned and conformed onto the company's SAN, Kimball was able to finish the 4K grading directly on the Resolve. He then used the complete da Vinci toolset to perfect the London and Provence scenes, making extensive use of da Vinci's PowerWindows to hone in on specific areas for detailed grading.
As a director, Scott also wanted the ability to work on the film throughout the colour grading and editing processes. With Resolve, a clip that has been colour-corrected maintains its original source references. 'A Good Year,' like all DI projects, was constantly being recut, but no matter how many times an image moved around on the timeline throughout the process, all the corrections were retained, meaning Kimball never had to regrade any of the colour enhancements.
"Modern VideoFilm's use of Resolve for 'A Good Year' demonstrates the remarkable look a filmmaker can achieve with 4K resolution in a DI environment," said Bill Robertson, General Manager at da Vinci. "We are proud of the role we played in enabling this achievement and are looking forward to seeing more people embrace this workflow in the future."
