Peter Johnston Succeeds Anna Carragher As BBC Northern Ireland Controller
Peter Johnston is to be the new Controller, Northern Ireland, the BBC has announced.
He succeeds Anna Carragher, who retires on 17 November 2006 after six years in the job, and will formally take up his new position on that date.
Peter - who is 40 - is currently Head of Broadcasting for BBC Northern Ireland, a post he has held for the past three years, with overall responsibility for the commissioning and scheduling of programmes and content for Northern Ireland audiences on BBC TV, BBC Radio Ulster, BBC Radio Foyle and BBC Online.
Johnston said: "It is an honour to be given this incredible opportunity and I look forward to working with all the staff at BBC Northern Ireland to meet the many challenges ahead.
"I would like to thank Anna Carragher for being a great colleague and inspirational leader over the years."
Commenting on the appointment, Pat Loughrey, Director of BBC Nations and Regions and himself a former Controller of BBC Northern Ireland, commented: "Peter Johnston's knowledge of the Northern Ireland audience is second to none.
"He has been a very successful Head of Broadcasting and I am confident that he will be an equally successful Controller."
Johnston was born in 1966 and educated at Ballymena Academy.
After reading Chemical Engineering at Imperial College, London, he worked for Shell International in London and PricewaterhouseCoopers in Belfast.
He joined BBC Northern Ireland in 1994 as a Research Executive, progressing quickly to become Head of Marketing and Development.
He then became Head of New Media for BBC Nations and Regions before taking up post as Head of Broadcasting in 2003.
