Scholars to establish association for literature on screen

Leading scholars will meet at De Montfort University (DMU) Leicester in September
for a conference launching a ground-breaking association for literature on screen.
The event is being staged thanks to a £42,500 research grant to provide, for the first time, a forum for scholars of literature on screen to share approaches, opinions and resources.
Lead by Dr Deborah Cartmell, Subject Leader in English at DMU, nine academics from various universities will use the Academic Collaboration Grant from the Leverhulme Trust to form the international Association of Literature on Screen Studies.
They will also establish an accompanying academic journal and stage the inaugural conference of the association at DMU on September 11 and 12.
Conference speakers from America, Australasia, Europe and the UK, will give talks on authors from Henry James to Virginia Woolf, Emily Bronte to Agatha Christie, as well as a host of films and TV adaptations. There will also be a conference dinner at Walkers Stadium.
Dr Cartmell said: "From Shakespeare to Chaucer, Du Maurier and Thomas Hardy to name just a few, classic literature has been adapted for TV and cinema, and classic film is increasingly influencing English literature.
"While literature on film has been around since the beginning of cinema and has been responsible for provoking the most heated of debates, the subject is only just beginning to receive academic respectability," Cartmell added.
DMU's expertise on the subject is well recognised and famous screen adapter Andrew Davies, who has brought classics including 'Bleak House' and 'Pride and Prejudice' to the TV screen, has given public lectures at the University on several occasions.
