CHANNEL 5 TO SEEK CENSORSHIP LAW CHANGE

SENIOR Channel 5 executive, Adam Perry, will this week use the Edinburgh International Film Festival as a platform to protest against British censorship law.
Perry plans to screen films containing sexually explicit scenes in order to highlight the inadequacies in British legislation, which he claims are outmoded and do not reflect public opinion.
Quoted in 'Scotland on Sunday' Perry said: "My position is that we are now in an illogical and possibly indefensible position in the UK, where we lag behind the rest of Europe in what we can see on subscription view."
Channel 5, recently censured by the ITC, stated that they were happy to work within current guidelines, and Perry agreed that his opinions were his own.
Groups opposed to any relaxation of the law hold that people, especially minors, must be protected from material of this nature. Perry, however, believes that it is now time for the United Kingdom to recognise that technological advances, such as encryption and pin protection, allow for children to be prevented from seeing explicit scenes.
Other broadcasting organisations, including a spokesperson from Channel 4, have indicated that United Kingdom legislation requires review.
