A MILLION WATCH IRISH EDITION OF ‘MILLIONAIRE’

OVER a million viewers watched the first Irish edition of ‘Who Wants To Be A Millionaire’ on RTE One.
When Gay Byrne put the first questions to contestant Des O’Connor at 7.30pm, 1,220,000 people all over Ireland were watching. Viewing figures were higher for the second part of the quiz with an average 1,227,000 viewers.
Cathal Goan, Director of Television, said: “We’re all delighted in RTE with the success of ‘Who Wants To Be A Millionaire’. The range of questions have given an Irish dimension to this international television phenomenon, and Gay Byrne has firmly stamped his own personality on it.”
Between 7.30pm and 8.00pm, RTE’s combined share of the audience for both channels was 80 per cent of those watching at that time.
‘Who Wants To Be A Millionaire’, devised by Celador, is produced for RTE by Tyrone Productions and sponsored by Eircell.
