NEW DIGITAL FILM FACILITY FOR LONDON
DANISH company Digital Film Lab have chosen Clerkenwell, London, to house their new UK facility.
Digital Film Lab UK, who will open their doors in November, will be the first major facility in the UK to work exclusively in data and high-definition.
Designed around Philips' Spirit DataCine and VooDoo Data Recorder, together with Arri Laser and Inferno, Digital Film Lab UK will offer film makers the opportunity to grade and assemble their feature films in real time, completely replacing the intermediate laboratory process and delivering both a digital negative as well as an uncompressed HD master. Film can be transported from the Spirit DataCine directly into Voodoo as uncompressed D6 data. This can then be stored in D6 format or converted to D5 for TV stations to play out to HD.
Feature films shot on S16mm, 35mm or digital video, as well as film archives and commercials for cinema release, can be digitally mastered and graded in real time. This removes the editing restrictions imposed by traditional laboratory methods and allows seamless assembly and integration of digital shots.
Designed on four floors, Digital Film Lab UK aim to recreate the relaxed Scandinavian feel of their parent facility in Denmark, which will shortly be processing the new Bertolucci film "L'Amore Probabilmente". With the Copenhagen facility fully booked, an additional facility in the Post Capital of Europe was an important move and the first two feature films are already booked in.
The basement will house a 35-seat viewing theatre and provide facilities for film preparation and cleaning, with subsequent floors providing suites for Spirit, Inferno, and the HD mastering control room.
