Australian caption centre extends relationship with Sysmedia

SysMedia Ltd, leading specialist in subtitling solutions and content management and production systems for interactive TV and teletext, has announced that The Australian Caption Centre (ACC) has purchased a complete new WinCAPS subtitling system for the real-time captioning of news and other live programmes for Australia's Special Broadcasting Service (SBS).
The negotiations were handled through SysMedia's Australasian distributor, Magna Systems and Engineering, who have also installed the system.
The project includes the WinCAPS News module to acquire prepared news scripts directly from the SBS newsroom system. This reduces the amount of work required by the captioning team and helps to lower the stress inevitably involved in working on live television.
For unscripted segments SysMedia's latest SpeakTITLE software for live captioning using speech recognition is also included. This builds on the great success that ACC has already experienced using this technology during the captioning of ABC's coverage of the Hopman Cup tennis, for instance.
Andrew Lambourne said: "The Australian Caption Centre is one of the world's leading captioning agencies, and the fact that it has selected the WinCAPS live subtitling system underpins its dominance in this sector. Subtitling live TV is a challenge and SysMedia provides the necessary tools for this to be done efficiently, quickly and accurately. We have worked closely with ACC as it continues into the new realm of speech recognition, providing advice and guidance to its team of dedicated professionals."
The sale also demonstrates SysMedia's continuing expertise in the challenging area of subtitling live television. The company’s solutions are so flexible that the same products can be tailored to suit a diverse range of customers and situations. For example, WinCAPS Live satisfies the requirements of both this major national broadcaster and a small regional broadcaster such as Channel 7 Queensland. Here WinCAPS delivers semi-automated subtitle preparation and playout to five simultaneous regional newscasts - with just one operator.
