FILM 2000 'CINEVERSITY' ADOPTS WORLD THEME

THE ONGOING 'Cineversity' programme organised this year by the University of Ulster centres on the theme of world cinema.
The programme of events has so far included screenings, discussions and seminars organised in partnership with a range of agencies.
Launched with a very successful screening of Deepa Mehta’s film, ‘Earth’ on September 21 at the Queens Film Theatre (QFT) in partnership with the Belfast Film Festival, the programme included the screening of ‘Kundun’ at the University of Ulster at Jordonstown and ‘The Cup’ at QFT. Both screenings were in partnership with Amnesty International to mark the recent visit of the Dalai Lama to Northern Ireland.
As part of the Foyle Film Festival Programme there was a screening of the Sierra Leone documentary ‘Cry Freetown’ with a discussion with the award-winning filmmaker Sorious Samura and director Ron McCullagh. An illustrated discussion in Magee College, ‘How We See Ourselves in Film’ with Martin McLoone looked at the representations of communities in Irish cinema.
Organised in partnership with the One World Centre, Northern Ireland, a screening of a special report from the RTE series ‘Divided World’ was shown on November 28, with a contribution from RTE producer and editor Betty Purcell.
Lecturer in Film Studies at the University College Dublin Jean Dunne introduced ‘Third World Cop’, a cops and robbers story screened at the QFT. Full of jokes and authentic patois, it is the highest grossing film in Jamaican history.
In association with the Northern Ireland Film Commission (NIFC), recent short films from Northern Ireland were shown at the University of Ulster, Jordonstown. Brendan Byrne and Dermot Lavery introduced the films and discussed the future of short films in Northern Ireland.
In association with the Cinemagic Film Festival, ‘Legacy’, a documentary film about the lives and times of three generations of African Americans, whose lives are changed forever as the result of a high school shooting, was screened at UGC Cinema in Belfast on December 4. There was an introductory commentary from Dr Dianne Kirby who is a Lecturer at the University of Ulster.
Screened in association with the International Students Society, ‘La Vie Revee des Anges: The Dream Life of Angels’, a raw and compelling story of two penniless young Frenchwomen, adrift and living hand to mouth, who wind up forming a bond of enormous delicacy, was shown at the University of Ulster, Jordonstown on December 5.
The Cineversity programme runs until February 9, 2001, and includes screenings of ‘The Commitments’ on December 13, and many more films and discussion events.
