DTS announces the opening of new encoding facilities for film
DTS has announced the opening of two new digital sound encoding facilities for film in China and Argentina in cooperation with Media Business Services (MBS) and FX Design.
The two facilities are based in Hong Kong and Buenos Aires respectively, and will enable encoding, mastering and replication of DTS soundtracks for locally produced film content. The addition of these facilities will also allow local filmmakers to more easily integrate DTS soundtracks into their films. With the addition of these new facilities at FX Design and MBS, DTS currently maintains 15 film encoding facilities across 12 countries, including the US, UK, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico and Thailand.
Unlike other audio formats for film, DTS soundtracks play back via a separate CD-ROM or hard disk, providing flexibility and eliminating sound degradation resulting from film print deterioration.
In the post-production process, a DTS Timecode Generator creates a timecode track which is exposed onto the soundtrack negative along with the optical soundtrack. The DTS system reads the proprietary timecode and synchronizes playback from a DTS audio playback system that automatically recognizes and plays the correct soundtrack for each frame of the film projected.
This ensures that the audio quality remains true to the original artistic intent of a film’s director and mixer. In addition to delivering outstanding audio quality, the DTS playback systems also have the capability to allow a single film print to be played with subtitles or captions in various languages projected onto the screen.
“The opening of the MBS and FX Design encoding facilities addresses an increasing demand for DTS best-in-class surround sound technology in these important film markets,” said Don Bird, Senior Vice President, Cinema Division at DTS. “These new facilities represent our commitment to continued expansion to support our growing customer base worldwide.”
“By installing DTS encoding equipment, MBS is able to provide our prestigious clients with the ultimate distribution choices,” said Kinson Tsang, Founder and Managing Director of MBS. “As a matter of fact, DTS sound is considered a preferred format by the Mainland China film authority, and we are now able to deliver DTS mixes very quickly and efficiently.”
“FX Design is pleased to offer our customers the pristine sound quality that DTS brings to the cinema-going experience. The flexibility of the DTS format provides countless new possibilities to our industry,” said Osvaldo Vacca, CEO of FX Design.
