Pioneering degree for musicians and video makers launched
Budding computer-based musicians and fledgling video makers can now sign up to a pioneering University of Greenwich degree in Entertainment Technology, which will admit its first students this September.
“The advent of digital recording has enabled individuals to produce high quality music and video, but many have no formal training,” said Programme Leader, Richard Jones. “This exciting new degree will teach state-of-the-art technology skills used in music and video production and editing, web and multimedia development, games programming and animation.”
Students will also benefit from entertainment business studies courses, where they will be taught business planning and project management, marketing, accounts, media law and entrepreneurial skills. They will gain experience of working in recording studios, setting up their own web sites and making their own videos.
“This is very much a practical, hands-on degree that will prepare students for successful careers in the entertainment business,” said Jones. “They will be taught by lecturers who are practising musicians and entertainment entrepreneurs.
“The University of Greenwich will be one of very few universities in the country to offer a BSc in Entertainment Technology that combines technical skills with a business and cultural grounding in an expanding industry.”
The course will also engage students in a wide variety of cultural ideas and traditions on topics such as world music, dance, film music, art appreciation and graphic design.
“We’re looking for creative students,” added Jones, “but not necessarily with a musical background. By the time they graduate, we will have provided those students with a package of skills that they can sell to the entertainment industry.”
