BBC SCOTLAND UNVEIL DIGITAL HQ PLANS

BBC Scotland have unveiled plans for their new digital broadcasting headquarters, to be located at Pacific Quay on the south bank of the River Clyde in Glasgow.
The building, the BBC’s first digital broadcasting centre of the 21st century, will be designed by London-based David Chipperfield Architects. DCA were chosen from a strong field of over 70 international companies who competed to win the contract to design the prestigious headquarters building, to be built on the former Glasgow Garden Festival site.
BBC Scotland Controller John McCormick said: “The outstanding quality of the design befits this landmark project. I am delighted that we will be working closely with David and his team over the next few years to produce a world-class facility for the BBC and for Scotland.”
He continued: “The design is radical, imaginative and exciting. It combines the production spaces we require with a real understanding of the importance of creating an environment that is accessible and welcoming to staff, visitors, contributors and to members of the public.
“The building, and its riverside location, are intended to allow it to ‘anchor’ the whole Pacific Quay site, around which other creative industries may grow. I believe the new headquarters building will come to embody everything that the BBC stands for in Scotland - creativity, professionalism and a powerful sense of community.”
To provide a welcoming environment for BBC staff and visitors, the main entrance hall will be open and spacious, with information displays and computer facilities for members of the public
Production and technical facilities will be located on the upper floors. Additional radio studios and editing facilities for radio and television will be easily accessible from the areas where the production departments are based. The news centre will feature a Reporting Scotland studio with a live background, overlooking the Clyde.
A variety of work settings - from ‘touchdown’ spaces to allocated desks - will be provided. These will meet the varied needs of BBC Scotland staff and ensure that building space and facilities are used as efficiently and as effectively as possible.” (CD)
