WHAT IS THE FUTURE OF FILM?

HAS THE future of film arrived? It's never been easier for anyone to pick up a camera and become a film-maker. But is digital video (DV) a force of empowerment for a diversity of voices in cinema?
The British Film Institute's monthly film voice on cinema, Sight & Sound, and the Film Council's New Cinema Fund will be debating this current and controversial subject with cinema-goers and film-makers across the UK in a series of open roadshow talks with film-makers and media commentators under the banner of ‘The Future Of Film: Digital Or Die?’ from June 15 to July 16.
The discussion tour will visit Cardiff, Brighton, York, Londonderry, Bristol, Dundee, London, and Cambridge.
The discussions will take a look at new digital video film work from new directors with a shifting cast of DV film-makers, theorists, and experts all with a keen eye on what DV means for the future of film.
Guest attendees confirmed to date will include TV, radio presenter and film journalist Mark Kermode, TV and radio presenter Mark Cousins, author of 'The Name of this Book is Dogme 95' Richard Kelly, Sight & Sound editor Nick James, writer and critic Kate Staples, commentator Laura Mulvey, journalist Jonathan Romney and director of 'Late Night Shopping' Saul Metstein.
The supporters of DV production said there are no longer any excuses for would-be film-makers because DV is so affordable. But how much of this is true? How big a difference to a film can DV make? Does DV give film-makers the opportunity to be more innovative and daring? Has it created a new language? And if so, how? These debates are open to film-makers, film students, and audiences.
