BBC'S DRAMA CARE WINS THE GOLDEN REMBRANDT AWARD
THE Golden Rembrandt for best programme at IBC's Nombre d'Or Festival in Amsterdam was awarded to the BBC's Drama Care.
The film marks the return to television of Antonia Bird whose film ‘Priest’ brought her international recognition. It tells the story of one man's attempts to come to terms with the abuse he experienced as a child in a care home and how his cries for help were deliberately ignored.
The project was conceived against the backdrop of child abuse scandals across the UK and the creation of a Children's Commissioner in England and Wales.
‘Asta E/ That's Life’, the story of a village life in a remote part of Romania, won the Silver Rembrandt for Best Documentary (News/History/Biography) and also the Grand Jury Prize for Widescreen, the first film to win two prizes at the Festival. Thomas Ciulei's feature length film, entered by ZDF, is a heartfelt portrait of four people trying to get a grip on life in rural, post-communist, Romania.
The other Documentary prize went to French company Gedeon for ‘The Last Days of Zeugma’ which tells the story of the archaeologists who were racing against the clock to save the relics and remains of the ancient city of Zeugma which, in July 2000, was flooded to create a dam on the River Euphrates in Turkey.
A tragic-comic contemporary drama, ‘Soldiers by Moonlight’, by top, young Swedish director Tomas Alfredson, won the Silver Rembrandt for Drama for SVT.
A provocative new interpretation of Mozart's Don Giovanni entitled ‘Don Giovanni Unmasked’, directed by Barbara Willis Sweete, won the Silver Rembrandt for Music for the Canadian company Rhombus, their third win at the Festival.
LWT in the UK picked up Nombre d'Or's first award for Entertainment programming for ‘Kids Say the Funniest Things’. (CD)
