BBC Broadcast Centre integration continues apace with TSL

Television Systems Limited (TSL), UK-based independent broadcast systems integrator and manufacturer, has confirmed that progress at the new BBC Broadcast Centre is continuing apace with the installation and handover of the first channel management suites and technical facilities now well underway.
TSL was awarded the contract by BBC Broadcast in the middle of last year to design, install, integrate and commission new channel management facilities for all the channels offered by the BBC.
These new facilities are coming online rapidly as BBC Broadcast migrates from BBC Television Centre to the Broadcast Centre, located in the New Media Village at White City, London. This is one of the largest migration projects in broadcasting history with the complete redesign and relocation of playout and channel management operations.
The system comprises one of the biggest ever shared storage digital video server systems with corresponding broadcast automation and management systems. The system also includes one of the most advanced broadcast data networks ever designed for a television installation.
Andy Cooper, project director at TSL, said: "Undoubtedly the project is proceeding well and the handing over of playout rooms to the BBC is now underway. That is also the case with the MMO Area (ingest area) and the process will continue as the project moves forwards.
"The ECA (Engineering Co-ordination Area) is nearing completion as is the onsite test and training facility for BBC staff to be trained on the new automation system. This test and training facility will also allow for the complete testing of new software releases prior to rollout on the on-air system."
David MacGregor, Managing Director of TSL, added: "This is one of the most exciting and significant projects in broadcasting history. Our consortium has been working very closely with both BBC Broadcast and the key technology suppliers that are involved in the project to ensure smooth progress.
"This is a major undertaking and represents a significant challenge, a challenge that we are rising to on a daily basis. By working so closely together we also ensure that the project delivery accurately reflects the business vision."
The Broadcast Centre represents the BBC's vision for a fully collaborative and tape-free future and is set to be the largest and most advanced broadcast centre in Europe.
