NFTS Launches Location Management Course

News Image
The National Film and Television School (NFTS) has unveiled details of a new course it is to launch; the Certificate Course in Location Management for Film and TV Production is the only one of its kind in the UK and aims to meet industry demand.

The course curriculum has been designed with support from location management company, Salt Locations, who will also assist the NFTS in putting together a locations library and providing work placement opportunities.

The 12-week course will commence in May 2018 and is run by 1st AD and Location Manager Richard Lingard. He is also responsible for running the NFTS' Assistant Directing and Floor Managing Diploma.

Participants will learn from practical workshops and on-set location experience on NFTS graduation fiction projects and commercials, ensuring they leave the course with the practical experience and contacts for starting out in the professional world. Students will work closely with directors, producers, cinematographers and designers, providing all the information and support necessary for a successful location shoot from initial scout to wrap and reinstatement.

Richard Lingard said: "We identified that location management was a missing piece of the production jigsaw at NFTS; all departments are represented from Production Management to Assistant Directing but we've never had a dedicated locations department. The location manager role is integral to the financial viability of the production and shaping the resulting look and feel, which is why it was an obvious choice to introduce this new course."

Ross Kirkman, Director of Salt Locations, added: "It's a pleasure to support the new NFTS Location Management course. The industry desperately needs more skilled location managers and the School has the facilities and structure to give students the required real-world exposure to what it's like to work in this role and the know-how to build a successful and rewarding career."

Applications are open until 15 March 2018, with the course starting in May 2018.

Further information, as well as how to apply, can be found via the National Film & Television School website.
