Do NLE's Just Edit?

News Image
A decade ago every stage of Post-Production had a different set of hands. You had Supervisors, Editors, Assistant Editors, Assembly Editors, so on and so forth. The latest trends see most of the above brought down into the trusty skilled hands of one person. It now seems the industry's choice software applications are following in suit.

Avid Symphony was the leading high-end finishing application for TV productions. It was a standalone tool that would deliver the most sophisticated online edits and grades needed for long form projects. Now, Symphony has joined Avid's iconic editor, making Media Composer a new one stop NLE for Offline and Online editing, Grading and Effects.

Avid is not the only industry standard application merging Post-Production departments. Blackmagic's DaVinci Resolve 14 Studio, the renowned grading application of the industry, has been enhancing workflows since 2004. Across the world, DaVinci Resolve has been used on many Features, TV Shows, Commercials and more, and is still dominating the grading market. Now, however, they have introduced editing and added a powerful NLE to its tool set. You now have the unmatched power of Blackmagic's grading system coupled with a fast, familiar and intuitive Editor; all ready and waiting behind their iconic 3 petal logo.

Adobe are following similar lines. Premiere Pro has seen Lumetri for colour grading added in recent updates, which has meant the demise of SpeedGrade, Adobe’s colour grading application, only a few years after it was launched.

Apple's Final Cut Pro X is no different, its expansion, however, has not limited itself to just one other skill. With the constant increase in the available plug-ins, Final Cut Pro X is no longer just an Editor. Now, you have grading systems that can match DaVinci Resolve, huge range of FX plug-ins from numerous third parties to give your films that professional flair, and still the trusted Apple Motion and Compressor for that high end finish. All this, within Final Cut Pro X's growing ecosystem.

So your NLE probably does a lot more than you think, and learning more about what and how could save you a lot of money.
