The Machine Room grades highly acclaimed British movie

London post facility The Machine Room, has completed HD transfer, grading and de-spotting on the widely praised British feature film, ‘Dear Frankie’.
One of only two British films screened at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival, and starring Emily Mortimer, Gerard Butler, Sharon Small and Jack McElhone, Dear Frankie is due to hit British cinemas on January 14 2005.
The Machine Room’s colourist, Jeff Burgess, completed the transfer on the company’s Shadow telecine and graded the movie from 35mm film to HDD5 at 24p. As Burgess explained, the look of the movie was critical to its success: “Shona was very particular about the look she wanted to achieve. As it’s a very sentimental story, she wanted a filmic and soft feel emphasised by warm tones and calming hues. We spent a long time in Shadow getting the balance just right to match her vision.”
In addition to grading, Burgess panned and scanned the material for a 4 x 3 version. The Machine Room also carried out de-spotting work in its smoke editing system.
