Applications Open For BFI Film Academy 2016

News Image
The BFI Film Academy 2016 has opened for applications. The course is aimed at aspiring filmmakers between the ages of 16 and 19.

Starting in October 2016, the BFI Film Academy is located at the organisation's campus in central Brighton. It differs from the Brighton Young Filmmakers courses in that it includes ongoing assessment, together with written and independent course work, to build a portfolio, leading to an NCFE qualification. For this course, Brighton Film School is unable to consider applicants outside the specific age group (16-19), or in full time education at university.

The Academy runs once a week on a Monday evening (4.30pm – 6.30pm) as well as one induction Saturday morning and two shoot days on a Saturday (date TBC), from October 2016 to February 2017.

During the course, students will write, shoot, edit and premiere a short film. Alongside the acquiring and improving of technical skills, they will gain knowledge of the industry's history and culture through participation in film studies and the review and critique of film productions. Completion of all course work results in an NCFE Level 2 Award in Preparing to Work in the Film Industry.

Students of the Film Academy will:

• Receive hands-on filmmaking experience to help develop practical knowledge and skills
• Explore their creativity and passions in a supportive and dynamic environment
• Gain experience working alongside industry professionals who are respected practitioners in their field
• Watch a range of cinema from British Independent to specialised films
• Work on teams towards a practical film-based, either individually or as part of a team
• Once the Network course has been completed, they will become part of the growing BFI Film Academy alumni network with access to events such as BAFTA career talks. There is also the opportunity to complete an NCFE qualification on the course.

The cost to participate in the BFI Film Academy is £25, but bursaries are available.

Priority application for the course closes on Friday 22 July.

If there are still spaces after this date, it will re-open for applications.

To apply for a place on the course, students are asked to download the application form and submit to [email protected]. A written short film review – between 200 and 400 words – on one of the following films should also be submitted:

• 'Egg and Fag' by Rose Hendry
• 'Gasman' by Lynne Ramson

Successful students will be notified by email by Monday, 12 September.

Further information can be found via the Brighton Film School website here.
