TV Shows Achieve albert+ Certification
By adopting a number of sustainable initiatives, Channel 4's new eight-part factual series Educating Cardiff, and BBC's Celebrity MasterChef have achieved albert+ certification, it has been announced.
The producers of Educating Cardiff, Twofour, installed a dedicated three-phase power supply at the Cardiff school, replacing a traditional generator and making a £15,000 saving. The shed erected in the grounds as an interview pod has been donated to the school as part of a new garden allotment scheme. Furthermore, by removing disposable catering supplies, providing personal water bottles and instigating car share and bicycle couriers, Twofour was able to reduce its carbon footprint and make substantial savings across the production.
Working with the albert team, Shine Soho – part of Shine TV – introduced sustainable initiatives in the production of the latest series of Celebrity MasterChef. The actions resulted in three tonnes of CO₂ saved and significant cost savings across the series. Hybrid cars were used, low energy lighting was introduced with the move to a new studio, while all fresh produce on the show was sustainably sourced, with unused cooked food and other supplies donated to a local charity café. They were also early adopters of digital release forms, further saving CO₂ by not printing 1,000 release forms across the series.
Aaron Matthews, Industry Sustainability Manager, albert+, said: "Joining the growing line-up of albert+ certified productions, Shine Soho and Two Four shows have demonstrated that changing production practices can have a huge sustainable impact on a show that can lead to a number of environmental and financial benefits."
