Pepper commit ‘Murder’ for BBC2

Post-production facility Pepper have recently completed work on BBC2’s forthcoming four-part drama serial, 'Murder', from Tiger Aspect.
The series stars Julie Walters as a mother whose son is brutally murdered; the action focuses on the impact the murder has on her and others who come into contact with the crime through job or circumstance. The series is scheduled to air on BBC2 from the end of May 2002.
Chris Beeton, Pepper’s Senior Colourist, completed the grading using Pepper’s C-Reality telecine, the only one in the world fitted with a S16mm wetgate. The drama required the murder scene material to be replayed at different points throughout the four-part series, always looking slightly different. To achieve this Beeton carried out a normal grade for the telecine transfer, then the whole project was conformed. Beeton then went back to regrade the murder scene to give it a desaturated, bleached-out look and altered different elements for several versions – for example, one version draws attention to the blood at the scene.
Simon Giblin, Online Editor at Pepper, used the Avid|DS to complete the online edit and a deliberately simple and unobtrusive title sequence.
Paul Tothill, editor on Murder, has worked with Pepper on numerous projects including Stephen Poliakoff’s BAFTA-nominated ‘Perfect Strangers’ (BBC) and ‘Sweet Revenge’ (BBC). He commented: "Murder has been beautifully graded by Chris Beeton. Our whole team was really pleased with the results, especially on the shots which needed particular treatments, like the flashback scenes which called for a lot of grading to brighten, desaturate and camouflage different areas of the picture."
