Goal-Line Technology To Be Introduced
Unjust goal-line decisions could become a thing of the past for English football, as the International FA has agreed to introduce the measures following a long campaign led by the English FA.
Incidents such as Frank Lampard's disallowed goal for England against Germany at the South Africa World Cup in 2010 could become resigned to history, as the sport joins cricket, rugby and tennis in its use of technology to assist referees in making tough decisions.
The technology will be introduced on the first day of the 2013/14 English Premier League season.
British-based and Sony-owned company Hawk-Eye has been selected to provide the new technology to the 'beautiful game'.
David Bush, Marketing Director, Sony Professional Solutions, said: "Today’s announcement marks a real game-change for British football. Referees, players and commentators alike have been crying out for the introduction of Goal Line Technology, and, backed by Sony, Hawk-Eye will deliver the best decision-making tools for referees in the Barclays Premier League.
"Having already been established at the heart of tennis and cricket, it makes perfect sense for the same cutting-edge technology to now play a role on the football pitch at the highest level.
Mr Bush continued: "Sony has a strong legacy of bringing innovative technologies to the world of sport and, in particular, football. Today’s agreement reinforces our position as one of the world’s leading sports technology providers and underlines our commitment to deliver ever more compelling and enhanced experiences."
Paul Hawkins, founding director, Hawk-Eye, added: "Subject to contract, Hawk-Eye is delighted to be the partner the Barclays Premier League trusts to deliver accurate and reliable Goal-Line Technology. Through our years of experience we understand the responsibility that we have been given, and what is required to deliver the technology that football deserves."
