RTE screen a Stirling documentary on forensics
RTÉ are set to screen a documentary made by Belfast-based production company Stirling Film & Television Productions which opens the lid on Northern Ireland's forensic work.
'Probable Cause', a six-part documentary series, takes viewers on a journey through some of the most high-profile civilian and civil disturbance murder cases of the last 20 years.
Using dramatic re-constructions, news footage, police videos of the crime scene and the actual murder weapons, Northern Ireland State Pathologist Professor Jack Crane will show how pathology and forensic science were used to solve crimes. Police officers, forensic experts and witnesses will also contribute.
The series aims to take a look at the science behind the processes and techniques involved in solving murder crimes.
In the first programme, 'The Murder of Sonia Forsythe', the documentary looks at the case of teenager Sonia Forsythe whose body was found in a coalbunker in west Belfast in 1996. She had been missing for five years and was only 13 years old when she disappeared.
Police initially believed they were dealing with a runaway as Sonia had a history of instability. But her remains were found in the yard of a flat rented by local man James Junior Craig - the brother of one of Sonia's classmates whom who she was last seen with.
Although Sonia's body was badly decomposed, a unique fracture on her skull was matched with a poker found in Craig's flat. Craig, who had fled to England when the investigation resumed, was arrested and convicted of her murder. It transpired that Craig had kept Sonia's body in his flat in an upstairs cupboard wrapped in carpet before transferring it to the coalbunker. Craig lived with the body for five years and never admitted his crime.
'Probable Cause', which was first screened on Channel 5, will be screened on RTE One on Tuesday June 4 at 9.30pm.
