Director Ken Russell Dies

The enigmatic and Oscar-nominated British film-maker Ken Russell has died at the age of 84 after suffering a number of strokes.
The controversial director became known for films such as Women In Love, which featured a famous scene depicting Oliver Reed and Alan Bates wrestling naked, and The Who's infamous rock opera, Tommy.
In keeping with his unpredictable style, Ken appeared on Celebrity Big Brother in 2007, managing to last only a few days.
Celebrity tributes for the director are continuing to emerge, with Jonathon Ross calling him: "A film-maker of rare vision and unique talent. Also, a lovely man to spend time with."
Russell's career begain in the Merchant Navy and the RAF, before he worked as an actor and dancer. He then became a successful freelance photographer in the 1950s, which began his life behind the lens.
His short films Peepshow (1956) and Amelia and the Angel (1957) won him admission to the BBC, where he made several documentaries for the arts programme, Monitor.
His first full length hit was 1967's Billion Dollar Brain, starring Michael Caine, which proceeding his major success.
Russell died on Sunday in his sleep, according to his friend, the arts writer Norman Lebrecht. It is believed that Ken had been suffering from poor health for sometime and had been stricken by two strokes in recent months.
