Micro-budget Filmmaking Scheme Returns

Film London and BBC Films have launched the next round of Film London Microwave, the successful micro-budget feature filmmaking scheme.
Microwave also publishes a new online learning module and outlines changes to the scheme that will give successful filmmakers more support to develop their projects.
Microwave, which also receives support from Skillset's Film Skills Fund as part of A Bigger Future 2, is the groundbreaking training through production scheme, which has a slate of features including BAFTA-nominated Shifty.
Opening the fifth round of applications, Microwave is aimed at London-based filmmakers who have production experience and are keen to make the move into feature films. Successful teams are awarded production funding plus a bespoke programme of mentoring, training and support to produce a feature film for up to £120,000 with cash and in-kind support. The budget threshold is up from £100,000 in previous rounds.
First launched in 2006, this is the fifth year of the scheme, which has seen all completed films achieve theatrical release in the UK, with five other features in various stages of pre and postproduction.
The scheme now has funding and training resources to produce five new features, bringing the slate to a total of 13.
Adrian Wootton, Chief Executive of Film London, commented: "Through Microwave, Film London aims to stimulate a truly independent and unique approach to creative film-making.
"The way the fund is set up - with cash funding plus professional mentoring and support from script to screen - provides filmmakers the opportunity to develop both their creative and business skills in a hands-on environment.
"We are proud of Microwave's track record and its success in discovering new talent and progressing their careers; perhaps we will see them become the next generation of British Oscar winner.
"I am delighted to be launching the next round with our partners, BBC Films, Skillset and the Mayor of London, providing a fantastic opportunity to London's talented film-makers," he said.
Challenging London filmmakers to make a feature film on a budget of up to £120,000, the deadline for applications is Tuesday 3 May.
